Creating connections with the destination community while on an incentive trip from work is not just about sightseeing or indulging in the local cuisine; it's about immersing oneself in the culture, values, and experiences that make the area unique. Whether it's a volunteer project, a cultural exchange, or a conversation with locals, these interactions can enrich both the individual and the community.

Travelers increasingly seek to feel good about their contribution to the communities they visit, viewing their journeys as opportunities for meaningful engagement rather than mere sightseeing. They aspire to leave a positive impact, whether through volunteer work, supporting local businesses, or cultural exchange. This desire stems from a growing awareness of the importance of responsible tourism and a recognition of the interconnectedness of global communities. By actively participating in community initiatives, travelers not only enrich their own experiences but also foster sustainable development and cultural exchange, leaving a legacy of goodwill and positive change wherever they go.

With a growing workforce population identifying as Generation Z there is an increasing desire to do more good within communities in coordination with travel. According to a recent study by travelperk.com, 26% of Gen Z travelers would like to make a connection with the community and culture of the area they are visiting. Participants can then go home refreshed from their incentive trip, feeling good about their contribution.

In the past, the Luxury Travel Advisor event Ultra Summit has had “Backpack Night,” where the supplies were provided by the host, Questex, but participants stuffed backpacks meant for area school children. It was a brief opportunity to give back and also to give a moment for participants to connect while positively impacting the community.

Depending on the incentive destination, it may be appropriate to have short voluntary activities that celebrate local culture while contributing to a societal effort. You may want to partner with a school, library, or community center to facilitate giveaways or provide access to a simple project that would have impact.

Some incentive participants may like to select a project that matters to them and speaks to their values, so coming up with a selection of quick activities may be more feasible. You could offer a menu of opportunities upon their arrival and let them choose something they would find meaningful.

Creating connections with the community while on an incentive trip from work is not just a bonus; it's an integral part of the experience. By immersing oneself in the local culture, volunteering, engaging with locals, supporting local businesses, and practising responsible tourism, individuals can forge meaningful connections that enrich both their lives and the communities they visit. And doing business for good is always good for business.
