Committed to the CODE
Recently, SITE renewed its commitment to The Code (short for The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism) via PACT (Protect All Children from Trafficking).
The Code is a multi-stakeholder initiative with a mission to provide awareness, tools and support to the travel and tourism industry to prevent the sexual exploitation of children.
The core tenants of The Code are to:
- Establish a policy and procedures against sexual exploitation of children and regulation of voluntourism.
- Include a clause in contracts throughout one’s value chain stating a common repudiation and zero-tolerance policy of the sexual exploitation of children.
- Support, collaborate and engage stakeholders in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children.
- Train employees in children’s rights, sexual exploitation prevention, and how to report suspected cases.
- Provide information to travelers on children’s rights, the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and how to report suspected cases.
- Report annually on the implementation of the six criteria of The Code.
Sadly, there are over 168 million child laborers around the world so this fight must continue.
Hospitality and travel professionals have a powerful opportunity to help end this atrocity through identification, training and programs for those in danger.
